Dehydration-induced mechanical instabilities in active elastic spherical shells

چکیده
Active elastic instabilities are common phenomena in the natural world, where they have character of sudden mechanical morphings. Frequently, driving force instability mechanisms has a chemo-mechanical nature, which makes very different from standard instabilities. In this paper, we describe and study active occurring swollen spherical closed shell, confining water-filled cavity, during dehydration process. We set up few numerical experiments based on stress-diffusion model to give an insight into phenomenon. Then, present that looks at problem and, through simplifying assumptions, allows us derive semi-analytical It takes account both stress state water concentration walls shell onset instability. Moreover, it considers invariance cavity volume instability, is due impossibility instantaneously changing filled with water. Eventually, shown semi-analytic matches well outcomes far initial regime; ranges validity approximated analytical also discussed.

Parametric Resonance in Spherical Immersed Elastic Shells
We perform a stability analysis for a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem in which a spherical elastic shell or membrane is immersed in a 3D viscous, incompressible fluid. The shell is an idealized structure having zero thickness, and has the same fluid lying both inside and outside. The problem is formulated mathematically using the immersed boundary framework in which Dirac delta functi...
متن کاملMechanical Characterization of Micromachined Glass-Blown 3-D Spherical Shells
This paper reports a non-contact experimental characterization of resonant modes in micromachined spherical shells fabricated by pressure and surface tension driven plastic deformation (glassblowing). For a glass-blown shell with 0.9 mm diameter and 10 μm average thickness, dynamically balanced 4and 6-node vibratory modes were identified at 1.27 MHz and 1.44 MHz, respectively. Without any trimm...
متن کاملGeometry-induced rigidity in nonspherical pressurized elastic shells.
We present results from an experimental investigation of the indentation of nonspherical pressurized elastic shells with a positive Gauss curvature. A predictive framework is proposed that rationalizes the dependence of the local rigidity of an indented shell on the curvature in the neighborhood of the locus of indentation, the in-out pressure differential, and the material properties. In our a...
متن کاملNematic textures in spherical shells.
The equilibrium texture of nematic shells is studied as a function of their thickness. For ultrathin shells the ground state has four short 1/2 disclination lines but, as the thickness of the film increases, a three-dimensional escaped configuration composed of two pairs of half-hedgehogs becomes energetically favorable. We derive an exact solution for the nematic ground state in the one Frank ...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Instabilities in Ion-Beam Accelerated Shells
The role of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities (RTI) in layers accelerated by heating with heavy-ion beams is of obvious importance but has received little attention. Owing to the lack of ablative stabilization, it is of special interest to what extent the density gradient can play a stabilizing role. We regard the situation shown in Fig. 1: an absorber region is heated by a beam in order to acceler...
